Trad session
at Nancy's Bar · Ardara, Co. Donegal
Seventh-generation family-run pub in the heartland of Donegal tweed country. Friday and Saturday sessions. Famous enough that musicians plan journeys around it.
Donegal has its own fiddle style — faster and more ornamented than anything you'll hear in Munster. Nancy's Bar in Ardara and Leo's Tavern in Crolly (Enya's family pub) are the two pilgrimage sites.
The Donegal fiddle style — technically demanding, rhythmically distinct, and played faster than the Sligo style — has a dedicated international following. Musicians travel specifically to Donegal to hear it played in context. The county's remoteness has preserved a session culture that's genuinely different from the rest of Ireland.
